A new study found that a commonly used antibiotic, bactrim, may reduce the rate of blood thinning by 90%.
The findings are published today in the Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
The study, by Dr. David Kesselheim, M. D., of the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, found that a combination of oral, IV, and IV bactrim, the most commonly used antibiotic in pediatric populations, reduced the rate of blood clot formation by 90%.
The researchers also looked at the use of sulfa drugs, which are common drugs used for the treatment of infections. They found that bactrim may reduce the risk of clot formation by 90%.

“This finding suggests that the combination of these drugs may offer a potentially useful treatment option in pediatric patients,” said Dr. Kesselheim.
The study was funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Rationale for the Use of Bactrim
Bactrim, an oral antibiotic, is widely used to treat various bacterial infections. In the United States, it is prescribed to adults and pediatric populations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for more than 10 million doses (1,200 mg) every 12 hours.

In fact, the risk of blood clot formation increased in patients with preexisting blood disorders, such as multiple myeloma (MYE), as early as the first week of treatment and as late as the second week.
However, the risk of blood clot formation is still present in patients treated with Bactrim, which can lead to severe symptoms such as fever, headache, and/or shortness of breath.
